Text Box: “Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell.” Psalm 43:3. This is a prayer I have often prayed when entering the Luzerne County Prison.  I am on the Volunteer Staff of Second Chance     Ministries and a member of a team consisting of three women who lead a      12-step Bible-based group for incarcerated women.  It is called the SAV Program; (AKA Substance Abuse Victorious).

It is a privilege to bring the Word of God to these women.  God’s Word is truly light and truth in a  dangerous world.  We want these women to not just survive, but to thrive, and to rise above life’s difficulties with the help and love of our Higher Power, Jesus Christ!  We thank God that He is using the faithful volunteers to bring Jesus to the inside.

Yes, it is possible!  Families can be restored! Addictions can be overcome through fellowship with other believers, and with the power of God who loves us unconditionally.  The Bible in one hand and the 12-steps of rehabilitation in the other are the gifts from God that we bring. I like to think of the twelve steps as the twelve steps of victory!

Text Box: PRISON MINISTRY THROUGH THE EYES OF A VOLUNTEER

Text Box: I’ve been a volunteer in prison ministry for ten years this February 2010. People ask, “How could you volunteer for such a long time?” The answer is simple, it is not about me. When the Lord open the door in 2000 for me to become actively involved in prison ministry it was the best opportunity that every happened to me. Prison Ministry has enriched my personal life and has literary taken the lid off of my   spiritual walk with Christ which has been a process. Process is a word most people do not welcome and I must admit in the beginning I was the same way. After seeing first hand what God can and will do with a faithful heart that desires to serve Him.  Words can not express how it feels to make a difference in another person’s life. It is a spiritual high unlike no other natural high that a person can experience.

Volunteering is one way of expressing Jesus in a person’s life. Similar to the body of Christ, each and every member is important and needed to complete the function of God’s will. Many parts of the body are not ever seen but are vital to bring life forth, such as the human heart. Would you like to start your day tomorrow with your heart not working?  A person cannot see their heart but they know it is there and vital to their existence.

Being a volunteer has the same perspective even though the volunteer may not be seen. In the end, the volunteer is an important carrier in which the gospel is brought forth to peoples’ lives. Each month when I facilitate a Bible Study, I get to see the joy on the inmate’s faces when they see that the volunteer has arrived, it shows them that they have value and worth. They are somebody who is important!  The Word became flesh through Jesus Christ and Christians are the only way Jesus can be mobile in the earth; we are His hands and His feet.

As a servant of the Lord, my heart cries out as I ask the Lord to send me wherever He needs me to go for Him. I have been so richly blessed! I stand on the scripture which promises believers that if we take care of His; he will take care of ours. I have witnessed this many times throughout my walk. Through serving Christ, I have been healed as I shared the Word to others. The Word is alive and never comes back void so the benefits have been far greater than one could image. Physical healing, restoration of families, and the tangible Peace of God are just a few of the signs and wonders I have seen as a volunteer.

It’s a privilege to be able to serve the Lord in the capacity of volunteering to bring His Word to others. A woman of the Word I am; I take every promise that God has written as mine personally. Volunteers are the backbone to any organization, especially Prison Ministry without exception.
